MARS MATERIAL LOOP03C / 05

Build with the dirt.
Do not spend the water.

Mars v1 uses compacted regolith for bulk mass, binderless vitrification for hard surfaces and recycled mission polymer for precision units. Sulfur and water-based binders remain resource-gated upgrades.

FUTURE
03C.2 / AUTONOMOUS LOOP

Every quarry cell is a material lot.

01SURVEY

Orbital maps propose; landed instruments certify the actual construction zone.

02EXCAVATE

Scoop skims loose regolith and bores only where hardpan or buried ice justifies it.

03ISOLATE

Screen and dry inside a dust-managed path; classify external versus crew-contact feed.

04TRANSFORM

Compact, vitrify or hot-press only under a signed, locally qualified process envelope.

05INSPECT

Record mass, grading, thermal history, geometry, porosity indicators and witness coupons.

06RELEASE

Proof-load the work, repair exceptions and preserve the delivered liner as pressure boundary.

03C.3 / WATER LEDGER

Water is possible. That does not make it cheap.

SURFACE SOIL EXAMPLE~2 wt% water

Curiosity measured roughly two percent in one sampled soil. Even impossible 100% recovery would require processing about 50 tonnes for one tonne of water.

NASA REFERENCE ARCHITECTURE~700 t regolith / month

A larger Mars water concept processes roughly this mass to make about 3.4 t water, with a ~3,300 kg plant and ~55 kWe peak-power reference.

SWOVEE POLICYConstruction is last in line

Crew, agriculture, oxygen and propellant receive priority. Aqueous construction activates only after a durable production surplus and closed recovery loop exist.

03C.4 / SULFUR TRUTH

Waterless is attractive. The resource claim is unresolved.

WHY IT ATTRACTS

Low-temperature thermoplastic binder

Elemental sulfur melts near 120°C, can be reheated and recycled, and laboratory sulfur-regolith mixes have produced useful strength without cure water.

WHY IT IS NOT BASELINE

Mars sulfate is not ready-to-use sulfur

Most known Martian sulfur is chemically bound in sulfates or sulfides. A reduction/refining plant, reagents, energy and a mineable reserve must exist before Swovee can claim local binder.

WHY COUPONS RULE

Reported performance varies sharply

One influential simulant study reported >50 MPa, while a later CO₂-rich study reported only 3.66 MPa maximum compression. Site and process qualification are non-negotiable.

S03 becomes an offered cartridge only after a landed survey confirms elemental sulfur or a separate refinery demonstrates closed-loop production. First uses remain pavers, linings and unpressurized works.

03C.5 / POLYMER CONTINGENCY

Turn packaging into precision blocks.

01RECOVER

Shred retired packaging, containers and approved habitat polymer streams.

02CLEAR

Keep untreated perchlorate-bearing regolith away from polymer until compatibility and off-gas tests release the lot.

03BLEND

Combine classified regolith with a rationed polymer fraction under recorded temperature and mass.

04PRESS

Use a compact stationary hot press for keyed tiles and blocks—not an Earth concrete nozzle.

03C.6 / CONTAMINATION + POWER

Dust and perchlorate live inside the architecture.

DUST

Seal the handoffs

Enclose excavation-to-processing transfer, isolate bearings and use replaceable optics, filters, wear liners and dust-cleared radiator faces.

OXYCHLORINE

Control the thermal release

Monitor oxygen and chlorine species during roughly 300–500°C treatment; separate external shielding feed from anything allowed near crew.

POWER

Connect to a surface grid

Do not make all-solar operation a requirement. Accept high-voltage mission power, schedule thermal loads and use batteries for mobility, peaks and safe shutdown.

03C.7 / RELEASE GATES

Mars is earned one precursor at a time.

  1. M0Ground truth

Measure mineralogy, particle grading, perchlorate, bearing strength, ice depth, sulfur form and excavation energy.

  2. M1Recipe

Qualify compression, flexure, fracture, thermal cycle, abrasion, permeability, off-gas and repair in Mars CO₂ and pressure.

  3. M2Endurance

Process tens of tonnes while injecting dust, wear, blocked feed, lost sensors and power interruptions.

  4. M3Autonomy

Complete a multi-sol campaign with no continuous Earth intervention and a complete material/inspection ledger.

  5. M4Flight precursor

An uncrewed mission builds and proof-loads a pad coupon, berm, wall segment and repair patch.

  6. M5Crew release

Accept Swovee works as civil protection; retain a separately certified delivered pressure boundary.
